For quite some time now Kelly was been considering getting a smaller breed of dog for the children to be able to manage easier as the Goldens are quite big and strong for them. After a great deal of deliberation and searching for breeders we decided that the Cairn Terrier would be an ideal smaller dog for the family.

We were fortunate to be able to find a breeder not too far from us who had recently had a litter.  Once we’d seen them we were keen to bring one home with us! It was a difficult decision in which puppy to choose - but I think she chose us actually!

Missy arrived home with us on 9th October. Photos and details of how she’s settling in will follow shortly.

Family dogs

On 9th January 2009 - Missy was attacked by a neighbours dog.  So severe were her injuries we thought she was dead.  Fortunately, luck was on our side and the vet was still open and their swift treatment surely saved her life.  We cannot praise them highly enough - they are truly life savers and we will be eternally grateful to them.  Missy had a broken jaw and many deep bites and tears. Initially it was feared she may have brain damage as the wounds were mainly around her head and neck. After 4 days being hospitalised she was able too come home and at the stage she was unable to stand up. Our constant nursing proved to be good enough to help her pull through and apart from having to wear a muzzle for 6 weeks and some scarring to her neck, she is looking remarkably good. I have now added a photo - this is 3 weeks after the attack - prior to this they would have been too shocking for you to see.

16/05/09 - Missy has made a really good recovery from her injuries.  She will never be perfect but she is to us!  She has managed to start her training towards her Bronze Kennel Club Award - Shannon is her trainer and they are doing very well together.  Missy has a very slight limp and her eye has nerve damage resulting in her third eyelid not always clearing properly. Her jaw is also not quite straight and her tongue sometimes sticks out of the side.  On the positive side, she mixes well with with all other dogs and once her coat grown back fully we hope that the damage will be less obvious.

As you can see from the above photos Missy has made an amazing recovery from her horrendous ordeal. She is looking very well and happy although the damage to her jaw will always be evident as you can see her tongue droops to the side when she pants.

Missy and Ellie have great fun - as you can see, Missy loves playing with the big dogs

Early in 2010 we decided to make enquiries about mating Missy. Our vet had no problem with it but we wondered if a reputable breeder would allow their dog to mate her as she now has slight deformities resulting from her mauling.  We were very pleased that a couple of breeders understood and we thought long and hard about which stud to choose. We eventually chose Anjofra Bang on the Door - Darcy.  He is a red Cairn and has produced some outstanding puppies that have done extremely well in the show ring. Missy was mated in late April and puppies are due 30th June.
